Korean bass-baritone Isaac Kim has developed himself as a professional singer and he has performed with various opera houses. Mr. Kim is an alumnus of The Atlanta Opera Studio, where he has performed numerous roles with great accomplishments. Notable appearances with the Atlanta Opera include Nicolas Murray/Barker in Robert Xavier Rodríguez’s beloved opera Frida, based on the life events of visual artist Frida Khalo. Mr. Kim also performed the role of the Second Soldier in Ricard Strauss’ Salome with great acclaim, having been reviewed as “a strong cast of singing actors…who sang the role of the Second Soldier with great skill.” He successfully worked with the company for the role of Alidoro in La Cenerentola, considered one of the most challenging roles for the bass or bass-baritone due to the extreme difficulty of the grand aria “Là del ciel nell’arcano profondo”.
He successfully made his Korean debut at the gala concert Opera Journey presented by Korea National Opera singing Banco from Macbeth and Méphistophélès from Faust at Seoul Arts Center. Ms. Kim has appeared in KBS(Korean Broadcasting System)’s Culture Anchor Desk, among others.
In recent seasons, Kim has also starred in the role of Bonze in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at Seongnam Arts Center with Maestro Patrick Lange. Kim returns to the SeAH Woon Hyung Lee Foundation this season as Sparafucile in Rigoletto in Busan, South Korea. Kim performs as a featured soloist in J.S. Bach’s St John Passion with Collegium Vocale Seoul at Seoul Arts Center.
During his 2022-2023 season, Kim has also performed in the role of Cassandro in Mozart’s La finta semplice(Korea premiere), the role of Raimondo Bidebent in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at Seoul Arts Center, and has increased his recital activities around the world.
In addition, Mr. Kim has performed with the Aspen Music Festival regularly. His operatic roles with the Festival include Don Pedro in Béatrice et Bénédict, Frére Laurent in Roméo et Juliette, Zuniga in Carmen, and most recently as Dottore Grenvil in La traviata.
As an accomplished concert soloist, Kim has sung bass soloist in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra last season. He has also participated in the DMZ International Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. He was a winner of the South Carolina District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Mr. Kim also won Ben DeBolt Memorial Award at The Henry & Maria Holt Memorial Scholarship Competition and the prestigious Phyllis Curtin Award at Boston University.
